First Grade Learning Expectations
The first grade curriculum is designed to educate students on how to become good citizens in a culturally diverse democratic society. As students explore the meaning of citizenship in a culturally diverse world they are encouraged to investigate conflict resolution as a means of restoring peace. By developing students' judgment and perspective in understanding the challenges of the present through knowledge of the past, we hope to develop each child's deep love of learning about our collective past. It is encouraged that students use questioning, intelligent reasoning and articulate their thoughts and opinions as a means of fostering creative inquiry. As students are actively engaged in the learning process, it is our hope that they will develop to be knowledgeable learners well prepared for the complexities of a global society.
School: A Learning Community
Students will understand that school is a place to learn and meet new people. We have rules in place to provide safety, manage conflict and create order within the school community.
Our school workers have roles and responsibilities to help make the school run smoothly and to ensure the well being of the students and their families.
From Neighborhood to Community
Students will understand that the word family has different meanings to different people. They will explore community as a collection of neighborhoods.
Community members will be presented as people who are part of a democracy and have rights and responsibilities. Students will also come to understand how environmental and historical factors affect a community and result in changes over time.
Then and Now
Students will understand that ancestors are part of our extended family and offer physical and cultural contributions to our lives.
They will experience how families celebrate using traditions and customs from the past. National holidays and cultural events that honor historical figures will be explored to deepen their understanding of our country both past and present. Through trips and a variety of learning experiences, students will see how life has changed overtime due to modern conveniences and technological advancements.
Me and My Place in Space: Geography
Students will understand that maps and globes are representations of the earth while models and symbols represent real things.
They will explore the ways families within a community are shaped by their environment. Folktales, fairy tales, porquois and stories from around the world will enhance student learning about other countries.
